Ok, so I'll be the first person to admit that, though a longstanding die-hard Rihanna fan, I was skeptical to believe all the hype surrounding Fenty Beauty's launch. I wasn't one of the first to run to Sephora to purchase one of Fenty's products; I sat back & watched the reviews, googled all the swatches. Everything looked gorgeous, but as someone who owns A LOT of beauty products, I'm really fussy about where I spend my hard-earned money these days.
But then I saw that she came out with 40 (Yes, FORTY) foundation shades, & that really got my attention. As someone who struggles constantly to find a shade that actually matches my undertones, I was so excited! Its such a frustration that in 2018, it should be so hard for women of colour to find a shade of foundation that actually matches their skin. It's totally unacceptable for major cosmetics companies to be releasing foundation lines with only 12 shades to choose from. I've had to become a mix master of sorts, blending different foundations together to get my perfect colour. Not everyone has the time or know-how to do that though, & that's why it's so refreshing to find a cosmetic company that makes products for ALL OF US.
That got me to Sephora real quick... I'm now also a massive fan of her Match Stix, particularly the trio in Medium 200. I'm a lover of cream-based products, & I'm also a sucker for the word "Contour". It came with a contour, highlight, & concealer. The concealer in the shade Bamboo is literally my exact skin tone. The contour shade is neither too warm nor too ashy, but it gives my face some much needed definition & can look quite natural or quite dramatic, depending on what you're going for. The highlight in Trippin' gives your face a warm, sexy glow like you've just been in the sun. Perfection. On top of it all, if you have oily skin like me, these don't budge or smear like many cream based products on oily skin are wont to do. My first impression when I swatched them was that they felt dry, but when I applied them on my skin they blended flawlessly. I think that slightly dry initial texture is what gives them such great staying power. They wore for 8 plus hours on my face before starting to fade. A+ in my book.
I also picked up the Bomb Baby Kit that contains a mini of the Gloss Bomb Lip Gloss in Fenty Glow & a mini Hu$tla Baby Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter, which is a powder. Again, Rihanna killed it with these two products. The lip gloss doesn't seem like anything unique at first glance, but on the lips it's like some magical substance that not only makes your lips look fuller & juicier, but it also manages to be flattering on everybody, no matter your skin colour or undertone. The colour is a sheer warm rose nude with a hint of shimmer. The shimmer isn't obvious, it just serves to make the gloss look even shinier. It's not sticky, it almost feels like a cushion-y gel on the lips, & it has great staying power for a gloss. Without eating or drinking, it stayed on my lips for 3 plus hours before starting to fade, but it was mostly gone once I had a meal. Hu$tla Baby is a pressed powder with a creamy texture in a golden champagne shade. It's glowy goodness, especially if you love an intense highlight. If you prefer something more natural, it can also be sheered out so it's more of a soft glow. Again, great staying power with it only starting to fade after 9 plus hours of wear time. A+ again!
My next purchase will have to be the Mattemoiselle Matte Lipsticks. I've had my eye on them for a little while now. I'm in love with the colours! So in summary, are Fenty Beauty's products worth the hype? In my opinion, hell yes. They perform like makeup products should & the line is as inclusive as it gets. Now all you have to do is let me know what you think of the line while picturing me running to Sephora to throw my money at them.
